Surprisingly better than the play
I first saw this movie in 1966. At the time, the term socially correct did not exist. I saw the play twice since then. Usually when plays are adapted, there is a loss of spontaneity. In this case, they replace a few songs with some better one-liners and facial expressions that would have been lost at a distance. If I were to describe all the great actors and plots this review would be pages long. So I will just say that this movie is "Something familiar, something peculiar, something for everyone: a comedy tonight!"

Ulla… "Go to work"
The original title “Springtime for Hitler.”

Leo Bloom (Gene Wilder) an independent accountant is discussing Max Bialystock’s (Zero Mostel), a play right, finances from his last play. They come to the realization that if you produce a flop you don’t have to pay back the money you collect. This holds true even if you sell more than 100% interest in the play. So they plan just that for the next play. First they must get money so Max launches himself into “Little old lady land”. Estelle Winwood gets to play “Hold me, Touch me.” To assure the play is a flop they find one called “Springtime For Hitler"; the find players to match such as Lorenzo Saint DuBois [L.S.D.] (Dick Shawn.).” In the mean time Max using the excess money picks up an assistant that can only speak Swedish. That is Lee Meredith as Ulla.

Do they succeed?
Do they learn their lesson?

ストーリーや内容は面白いが、詳細を見ていくと。
ストーリーや内容や展開は面白いが、舞台化された、ブロードウェイにおけるミュージカル"The Producers"よりは、細かい部分や、よりナチュラル感を出せるような細かいところまで満たされてはいない、多少不完全とも言えるような作品です。これがかなり完成度の高い、エンターテイメント性の非常に高いものにしたものが、ミュージカル版であるとも言えるのではないでしょうか。しかし、ベースとしてのこの作品は非常に面白いストーリー展開になっており、どうやら数年しないうちに、ミュージカル版が映画化されるようだから、ブロードウェイに見に行く人は、予習として見ておくといいかもしれませんね。
