This book is about a mother and daughter (Adele and Ann, played by Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman), who move to Beverly Hills from Wisconsin because her mother wants a fresh start. The problem of the movie lies there. It's only the mother that wants to move, not her daughter. Cue lots of fights, brooding, and moping from the daughter. And, as is common in this sort of movie, the mother is a flaky, tarty sort of thing. Cue one-night stands misinterpreted for true love, electricity cut off because of unpaid bills, and lots of scenes where the mother acts insufferably towards the daughter, and caps it off with "I'm doing this because I love you". I never thought I'd say this, but Susan Sarandon is annoying! Half the time I wanted to yell at the TV screen, and say, "Get a grip!" Natalie Portman fares better, but her beauty left more of an impression than her acting. There are many scenes that are dragged out in silence that attempt to be quietly moving, but only had me hitting the fast-forward button. There are so many other movies in this genre. Skip this one.
