Well done
I was surprised at how well all the elements came together for this film. Obviously the main cohesion is centered on Atticus Finch (Gregory Peck) and his relationship with his children, Scout (Mary Badham) and Jem (Philip Alford). I would classify this as one of Gregory peck's best movies. It almost had to be shot in black and whit to have the feel needed in the all but black and white movie.

Scout and Jem know very little about their neighbor `Boo' (Robert Duvall.) They have heard and made up strange stories. They spend time daring each other and their summer friend, to go up to the neighbor house as it holds some mysterious crazed person. Through the movie many odd things happen such as a tree that mysteriously offers a series of objects from marbles to a watch, among other things. What do we really know about our neighbors? Watch as the mystery unfolds. And what will they find out in this slice of life in the Depression-era South.

って威厳のある良き父親で、家族は穏やかで幸福に暮らしている。アティカスは、白人女性を暴行した罪で起訴された黒人青年トムの弁護を引き受けた。一方、ジェムとスカウトは、遊びに来ていた少年ディルと一緒に、精神異常者と噂される隣人ブーを見ようと試みていた。・・・
冒頭のタイトルバックは、子供の宝箱から。折れたクレヨン、動かない懐中時計などを見ていて、何だか懐かしい気分が湧きあがってきました。木登りをしたり、隣人の家に忍び込んだり、時には取っ組み合いのけんかをしたり・・・。生き生きと遊びまわる子供たちの姿に、誰もが幼い頃を思い出すことだと思います。
父親のアティカスは、2003年にアメリカの歴代映画のヒーロー第１位に選ばれました。公明正大で、中傷や脅迫にも屈することなく正義を貫くアティカスは、いつの時代でも憧れの存在なんだな、と感じました。２人の子供たちは、まさしく「この父親にしてこの子達あり」という感じです。優しく頼もしい兄のジェムと、おてんばで曲がったことが大嫌いなスカウトがほのぼのとした日常の中で垣間見た現実。きれいごとでは済まされず、価値観の違いで隣人でさえも敵対してしまう。肌の色で犯してもいない罪をなすりつけられ、思い込みや噂によって避けられる人がいる。重い内容ですが、子供の視点からノスタルジックに語られたことで、観た後は優しい気持ちと深い感動が余韻となっていつまでも残る、そんな映画でした。

The spirit of the play brought to life
I have been raised on this play and saw many versions. I have had the real story pointed out to me and meaning behind many of the words explained. However it is this adaptation that brought it to life not just intellectually but emotionally.

One of the first things you notice is the setting is a balance between stage and reality. This film being in black and white may have contributed to the atmosphere.

The actors are not just popular names but are able to bring the characters to life. I was impressed with everyone’s ability to the point that it took time to realize that Mark Antony is Marlon Brando; he among others is able to make the words real and meaningful, not just a bunch of Shakespearian phrases.

If somehow you missed the play or the history, basically Julius Caesar let his status go to his head and is about to take on the role of implorer. It is up to a handful of Noble Romans to see that this does not happen. The play is about these individuals, their individual purposes and what happens to them after the attempt to stop him. The focus is on Caesar’s right arm (Mark Antony).
