If you only LOOK at the cover for this video, you can tell that the lead is no Peter Ustinov, the yardstick by which all Poirot actors are measured:

“Death on the Nile” (1978)

“Evil Under the Sun” (1982)

“Thirteen at Dinner” (1985)

“Appointment with Death” (1988)

Tony Randal is a good actor under bad direction; however he is not the only thing that makes this movie lame. The timing is off, the music is second rate, and it does not even have the continental feel of a British movie.
Needles to say that, years later when David Suchet nailed the part that made this bad film unbearable.

Story is of Agatha Christie’s star detective Hercule Poirot investigates an alphabetical serial killer(s) based on Christie’s novel “The A.B.C. Murders”.

Save your money and save your time. Don't watch this adaptation-watch Ustinov instead!

Robert Donat is believable
This is the story of the 60 plus year life of a school teacher, Mr. Chipping (Robert Donat), from neophyte teacher to hopefully Head Master. On his way he will make several mistakes and learn from them. The movie has the feel of several stories running in series that all tie in to Chipping's life. He is also destined to meet the love of his life Katherine (Greer Garson) and see that the Danube is blue.

I do not want to go into a detail as that is the fun in watching eh stories unfold however I think it is significant when Chipping and Katherine are alone on the top of the world and time stops finding them selves in eternity. He also gets an insight or different slant of his carrier.

1969年版よりもこっちの方が出来は数段上！
ジェームス・ヒルトン原作「チップス先生さようなら」の最初の映画化作品。

全寮制パブリックスクールに新任教師として赴任したチップス先生(ロバート・ドーナット)はとにかく堅物で生徒たちの受けも今ひとつだった。しかしキャサリン(グリア・ガースン)と出会い結婚したことからチップス先生は徐々に柔軟になり生徒からも慕われる先生になった。その後、キャサリンの死、第一次世界大戦を経てチップス先生は今、学校の近くに住み毎日生徒たちの顔を見ながら余生を過ごすのであった…。

主演のＲ・ドーナットはこの作品で20代から80代までを一人で演じ「風と共に去りぬ」のクラーク・ゲーブル、「スミス都へ行く」のジェームス・スチュアート、「嵐が丘」のローレンス・オリヴィエなどを退け1939年度アカデ㡊??ー主演男優賞を獲得した。素晴らしい演技である。作風はサム・ウッド監督らしく温かみのある仕上がりである。1969年にリメイクされているがミュージカルで原作のイメージからかけ離れておりイマイチだった。その点本作は原作に忠実で雰囲気を上手に残しておりまさに傑作である。これほどの作品であるのに日本でビデオ化されていないのが残念だ。

Topper has a girl on his lap
And his wife caught him. Besides revisiting your favorite characters, there is a pretty good murder mystery going. There is an old dark house with secret passages and secret people. In the middle of this is Topper. And on top of Toper's lap there is a ghost.

Ann Carrington (Carole Landis) is returning to her old family estate. Traveling there with her friend Gail Richards (Joan Blondell), we see the front end of a rifle and soon the cab they are traveling in gets a flat tier at the most incontinent location. This sets the tone as later Gail gets ghostafied.

So who did it and why? Gail is determined to find out with the help of the only person who can see her Cosmo Topper (Roland Young).
