Don't monkey around with religion
This film is based on the play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee about the 1925, Scopes Monkey Trial. It is tricky to keep the differences between this play and the real trial apart in one's mind. Spencer Tracy (Henry Drummond) and Fredric March (Matthew Harrison Brady) spar over the legality of teaching of evolution in Tennessee. This combination is guaranteed to keep you glued to your seat. In this movie Scopes, while teaching evolution to a high-school biology class is arrested and placed in jail.
Some time the other characters get lost in the shuffle yet one other will show through. That is Gene Kelley who plays E. K. Hornbeck who reports the trial.

I will not give a blow by blow of the trail but to say it gets rather heated and is broken up with several adjournments with time to reflect on what was said and going to be said.

If you are interested in the real thing then read Scopes Autobiography "Center of the Storm."

日本ではあまり知られていない名作のひとつ
1961年といえば、『ウエストサイド・ストーリ』『ナバロンの要塞』
『ハスラー』そして『ティファニーで朝食を』などの名作が
リリースされているが、この『ニュルンベルグ裁判』は、
それらの影にかくれてほとんど忘れ去られた感じがする。

これだけの名優が共演しているのに日本ではDVDも売られて
いないみたいだ。アカデミー賞にしても、この年は
『ウエストサイド・ストーリー』が10部門で受賞し話題になったが、
『ニュルンベルグ裁判』も11部門でノミネートされ、
そのうち2部門で受賞している名作だ。検察と弁護団の
壮絶なやり取りは見応えがあって、すばらしいシーンの連続です。
被告のひとりにバート・ランカスターがいるが、なかなかの名演技でした。

誰が主演でもおかしくないが、やはり、西部劇でお馴染みの
リチャード・ウィットマークとやりあう若きマクシミリアン・シェル
（今作でアカデミー主演男優賞）の熱の入った弁護に圧倒されっぱなしでした。

隠れたスターとしては、裁判官役のスペンサー・トレイシーの
世話役の将校で出演していた人気テレビシリーズ『スタートレック』で、
カーク船長役のウィリアム・シャトナーがいましたね。
ジュディー・ガーランドもモンゴメリー・クリフトも持ち味を
見せてくれました。

3時間に及ぶ長編の割には短く感じました。それだけ見応えが
あったということです。できるだけ早くDVD化をお願いしたいものだ。

おもしろかったです
裕福なフィラデルフィアの家庭に生まれたグレース・ケリーが、
アカデミー賞を受賞する女優に成長し、モナコ公国のレーニエ大公と
結婚し・・・と次々と道を切り開いて行く過程がよくわかりました。
また、いかに魅力的な女性、ひいてはプリンセスであったか・・・。
今となっては不可能ですが、一度お会いしてみたかったと
思わされる一本でした。

ケリーの若い頃の貴重な映像も含まれています。

Reminds me of El Cid
Maybe this reminds me of El Cid because they are similar stories with Sophia Loren in both.

Based on a novel by C.S. Foster, a shoemaker (Frank Sinatra) and a misaligned woman who has a tendency to sleep with anyone (Sophia Loren) get their hands on a big gun. They are loaned a Captain from the English military (Cary Grant) to help point and shoot the gun at the bad guys. In this case the bad buys are French that occupy Spain. Through the movie the woman bounces back and forth between these two gentlemen each with his strengths and weakness.

C.S. Foster must have never been in the military as both sides in the conflict make the most stupid blunders. Come to think about it C.S. Foster must never have been in love and this ménage a trios make the most stupid blunders. Actually foster did writena few good ones as "The African Queen," Not as good as the movie.

Mean time back at the ranch the bad guys (French occupiers) run around like a chicken with its head rung off. The good guys (Spanish) with the help of peasants intend to blow up a fort held by the French.

Will they succeed or be cut off at the pass?

Can anyone help Frank Sinatra get over that horrible accent?
