However different people are get credit the different actions and thoughts than in the book. The first half of the movie is about solving a problem of how to make the Germans think that the invasion will take place in Sicily. The solution is barbaric and unique. The second half of the movie is to keep the Germans from finding out the deception. One of the most telling scenes is while there are preparing the deception and are in a bunker you hear the bombs and screams that remind you of the urgency and purpose of the movie. Clifton Webb is Lieutenant Commander Ewen Montagu, the person that the movie evolves around. Gloria Grahame plays Lucy Sherwood, an alleged girlfriend. The reason she shines is that they put a lot of grease on her face and it shines in the dark. If you saw Ben-Hur then you may recognize Messala (Steven Boyd) as the spy sent to be sure that Martin is genuine. And if you are an Agatha Christie Miss Marple fan you will see that Joan Hickson is the apartment owner. It is a great story and well told. It makes you want to find shirts with separate collars. カスタマーレビューピックアップ

I periodically watch this movie based on a play by Enid Bagnold who also wrote the novel “National Velvet”. Every one is well cast. You can see each one of these characters in the real world. The interaction is superb. They had no choice but to place the story in that location to show the chalk. Now let's get down to specifics. I like action, and this movie has plenty of paraffin. I think Deborah Kerr does well in “King Solomon's Mines” (1950), however I think she does better acting as Miss Madrigal who eventually straightens out relationships between the people she works for. Hailey Mills and John Mills are real life father and daughter. The one spot in the movie that you forget it is a movie is when Laurel finds out who Miss Madrigal really is and almost gives her away. You can feel what Laurel does at that moment and it is no longer just a movie. You are there. Again Miss Madrigal must reveal her identity to Mrs. St. Maugham for Laurel's sake, as Laurel listens from outside. The title gets its name from the garden they are trying to plant will not take because the ground is sterile chalk. Likewise Laurel in being brought up in the same environment. This is one of Walter Matthau's best movies, and as with all of his movies there is a great background musical score. They picked just the right actor for each character. I was impressed when he asked the man behind the counter if he knew German (not if he spoke German). Talk about nepotism David Matthau plays Ross and someone needs their eyes checked in the credits. The seaplane pilot was defiantly female (suppose to be his doughtier-in-law) Walter Matthau plays a top CIA agent who's being confined by office politics (Myerson) to a desk job for not taking out the Russian agent Yaskov played by Herbert Lom. The disgruntled Matthau quits the service and heads to Austria, where he links up with former lover (a fellow ex-agent) Glenda Jackson. All goes smoothly until Matthau acts on the advice of Yaskov, who suggests that Matthau, his memoirs (his life in the CIA.) Spitefully, Matthau sends out copies of his first chapter to the heads of the spy agencies throughout the world--and from that point on, he and Jackson don't have a moment's peace. This delights Matthau: now that all of his former colleagues are chasing after him, he has a reason to get up in the morning. As written by Brian Garfield, Hopscotch was a conventionally serious espionage novel. As adapted for the big screen by Garfield and Bryan Forbes, Hopscotch is a lively exercise in cloak-and-dagger comedy, even when the pursuit of Matthau turns surprising towards the end. There were several different angle takes and depending on your copy you may see Sam Waterston's face when he is standing on the cliff. Other versions show his shadow only. Tunes of Glory |
