スペクター･トリロジーのクライマックス！
前作「女王陛下の007」で、新妻トレーシーを殺害されて抜け殻になってしまったボンドは、その後の任務の失敗続きで、00課員としての資格を問われることになります。最後のチャンスとして与えられた日本での任務の途中で偶然ブロフェルドと対面することになります。
ブロフェルドもどうかしちゃったみたいです。九州の古城で日本の甲冑に身を包み、密かにやっていることといったら、落ち着いて考えてみると、愚にも付かないことです。しかも愛人が前作でお馴染みの、あのイルマ･ブントです。趣味悪いぞ、ブロフェルド。
最後にボンドはブロフェルドを倒す(殺す)のですが、自身も記憶喪失になってしまいます。その後、たまたま新聞の切抜きで見たウラジオストックという地名に反応し、ソ連（今のロシア）に旅立つところで終わります。お前がソ連に行ってどうする？
そして次作のフレミングの遺作である「黄金銃を持つ男」に続きます。この3部作を読んだら必ず次が読みたくなります。
日本人として読むと違和感を感じる部分もありますが、フレミングの特派員として目は鋭いです。戦後復興時の東京の建築ラッシュの様子なんかが描かれていて興味深かったりします。大きな誤解はありますが、細部は意外に正確です。外国人にとって、日本はエキゾチックだったんですね。

The Mirror Crack'd From Side to Side
An earlier version of this movie "The Mirror Crack'd (1980) ASIN: 6302990149" was made with a lot of glitzy characters. Some of them were quite good such as Rock Hudson (Jason Rudd). Others were distracting as they let their real personalities overwhelm the characters. One of the worst was Angela Lansbury's portrayal of Miss Jane Marple; she was much too cutesy. This film was to Americanize (black and white, judgmental.) and half the characters were combined for brevity.

Based on a novel, Christie, "Agatha. Mirror Crack'd, The", the film Miss Marple: The Mirror Crack'd From Side to Side (1992) (TV) (UK: series title) stays true to form. Joan Hickson is Miss Marple. Agatha Christie always considered her as the ideal Miss Marple; she shows this through her reserve savvy. Jane takes an interactive interest in the mystery and yet each character as part of the discovery, stands on their own. The ending of the story is as is in life, it is appropriate not black and white judgmental.

The answer to the riddle is in the tittle. Once again Aunt Jane has to sort things out when a friend Ruth asks her to look in on her sister, Carrie Louise. You anticipate that Carrie has had it. And you meet many unbalanced and seedy characters. While you are watching you can miss the whole thing as they do it with mirrors. Just side notes that the still pictures from this movie are on the back of the video sheath of "Murder at the Vicarage" Well paced and the perfect English actors to match each part.
