１９１６年のアメリカ映画。公開時日本語題名は「シヴィリゼイション」。監督はアメリカ映画のパイオニアの一人、トーマス・Ｈ・インス。２,３０年前までは映画の歴史について書かれた本や記事ではグリフィスの「イントレランス」などとともに必ずといっていいほど名前が挙げられていた「歴史的有名作」だったのですが、最近は少し軽んじられているようです。この映画は、当時長期化が確実になってきていた第一次世界大戦に対し、早期の戦争終結を訴える意図で製作されました。物語は一種のおとぎ話であり、戦争の現場をテレビ中継で見せられる時代の人間から見るとかなり甘いのですが、反戦の意思を明確に主張した相当の力作ではあります。
　画質は良好、伴奏音楽は公開当時のオリジナルのスコアを使用しています（作曲は後に監督になったヴィクター・シャーツィンガー）。ランニングタイムは８６分。
