弟ウンカスが泣かせる
　アメリカの歴史を勉強中ということもあって、アメリカ建国前の複雑な歴史を背景としたこの話にはかなり惹かれていました。
　

　実際に見て、ハッキリ言えば、史実がややぼやけ気味に描かれていることもあり、これは白人とネイティブアメリカンの戦いを描いたものなのか、フランスとイギリスに振り回されたネイティブアメリカンの悲劇を描いたものなのか、いまいちはっきりしないのですが、やはり弱者であり歴史から消されていったネイティブアメリカンの悲しみは心に沁みるのです。

　後半、残虐シーンた多々あるなか、物語はテンポよく進み、危機が迫るとあのバイオリンの音色とともにダニエルデイルイスをはじめとするモヒカン一族が走って助けに来てくれるのは女性なら感激もの。なんと言っても!ほとんど話さず笑わなかった弟のウンカスが、大佐の次女を助けに一人がけを駆け上がり、圧倒的に強い敵の大将にボコスコにやられながらも彼女と目と目で愛を語り散って行く様は涙なしには見ることができません。実際に、白人女性とネイティブアメリカンのあいだで危険な恋物語というものがあったのでしょうか。
　史実の重みとニンゲンの業を感じる悲しく切なく重い映画ですが、アメリカの美しい、神々しいまでの山々が圧倒的な迫力で静かに語りかけてきます。それだけでも見るに値する映画です。

戦いがすごかった
ダニエル・デイ・ルイスさんの「エイジ・オブ・イノセンス」出演時と同一人物と思えないたくましさ。マデリーン・ストウさんもきれい。でもイマイチだったのは二人が直線的な顔だから？それとも敵があまりに野蛮だったからでしょうか？

An anti-American Eagle! How diabolical.
The world is being held hostage by a cabal. They are threatening to change the weather if demands are not being met. All the top agents and teams have been sent to find and destroy them. Yet each has met with a fatal end.

Cramden (Lee J. Cobb) the head of Zonal Organization World Intelligence Espionage (ZOWIE) has been charged with finding a solution. After placing all the requirements into a 1960's computer and card sorter, they all boil down to one. You guessed it the undisciplined multitalented Derek Flint (James Coburn).

Can he save the world?

He hands back the issued code book and prefers to use his own code which is a progression of 40-26-36. It is based on... well you can guess.

Watch Coburn again in the same role but as a cowboy in "Waterhole No. 3" (1967)

An odd cast but that makes it a comedy
We won the war because we are the good guy's and know how things should work. But we are also nice guys and intend to raise the Okinawans in the American tradition. This starts with building a pentagon shaped schoolhouse. Captain Fisby (Glenn Ford) is sent there because he is so good at everything he does that the command is willing to let someone else have him (anyone else). With the influence of the local natives including Sakini (Marlon Brando) he is persuaded that they need to build their economy first.

Everyone seems to have gone somewhere from here. Eddie Albert must have used this picture to audition for "Green Acres." Paul Ford as Col. Wainwright Purdy III plays a similar character in "The Music Man" (1962) and Marlon Brando goes back to Asia in the other side in "Apocalypse Now" (1979). Harry Morgan is still in military garb in "What Did You Do in the War, Daddy?" (1966).
