「ドラゴン桜」に先立つこと３０年前の「勉強」映画
「勉強」そのものは人生の大きな要素にもかかわらず、「勉強」そのものを描いた作品はきわめて少ない。「ドラゴン桜」が注目されたのはまさにそこに目をつけた作品だからだと思われる（「カンニング嵐」は別）、「勉強に付随する恋愛とか学校生活の悩み」でなく、まさに「勉強」そのものを描いた作品の大先輩として、この「ペーパーチェイス」がある。ハーバードロースクールで、学生たちがいかに、単位を取得すべく勉強づけの日々を送るのか、そして、挫折していく人は挫折していくのかが、シビアに描かれていて、興味深い。映画自体のストーリー性や「でき」はともかくとして、勉強映画という新地平を切り開いた（けど、その後あまり続いていないけど）というその事実に☆４つ与えたい。

アメリカ大学生の勉学熱心ぶりに身が引き締まる
邦題「ペーパー・チェイス」。名門ハーバード大学法学部に入学した学生（「ジョニーは戦場へ行った」のティモシー・ボトムスが好演）が、最も単位を取るのが難しいとされる威厳のある老教授（ジョン・ハウズマンがオスカー助演男優賞受賞）のクラスで、その難題を乗り越えていく姿を描いたベストセラー小説（原作ジョン・ジェイ・オズボーン）を、ジェームズ・ブリッジスが脚色・監督したＦＯＸ配給１９７３年の力作。老教授の娘（バイオニック・ジェニーのリンゼイ・ワグナー）との恋に悩みながらも、ひたすら勉学に励む姿を追ったところがまず、今から思い出すと、空前のオリジナリティ溢れるところだった。それだけの描写で面白い映画が作れるということに気づかせてくれた映画だろうし、大森一樹の「ヒポクラテスたち」などもこの映画がなければ生まれていなかっただろう。米国の大学生はとにかくよく勉強することに感銘を受ける。これを見ると、特に法曹家の育成という理由もあるが、米国の大学の勉学の中心はほぼ、自分の言葉でしっかりした論理を構築していく作業を訓練することにある、ということがよくわかる。だから米国人はディベートが得意なのだ。少子にとっても、潜在意識中にいい影響を与えてくれた映画の一本だったかも知れない。正しいワイド・スコープサイズのＤＶＤ（Ｒ－１）も既に米国では発売されている。是非、日本盤を。

A simple hunter of seals
After many years a hunter of seals Essex (Paul Newman) comes home to the city. He beings his wife Vivia (Brigitte Fossey.) Before the greetings is over his extended family meats a violent ending. This is just the beginning for Essex as he must now make sense of this.
In the process we learn of a game “Quintet” that reflects the geometric universe and the sense of life.
Will he figure out the sense of the seemingly random disposal of life or will we finally get a glimpse of sixth space.
Keep your eye on the goose.
Appropriately filmed on location at “Man and His World”, Montreal. The film has an out of focus border to give us not a dream scene as much as the feeling we are watching the whole movie through a frosty window.

見せ場盛りだくさん。
何故かこの映画で売れっ子になるきっかけをつかんだグレイグ・Ｔ・ネルソン。最近はもっぱら脇にまわっていますが、公開当時はこの見知らぬ顔の男が映画にいい雰囲気を与えていたと思います。予算の都合もあったのか少女が取り込まれる霊界のシーンは一切ないものの、他にも見せ場が盛りだくさんなので特に気になりません。スピルバーグの映画といまでも話題に上りますが一本の映画としては結構好きな映画です。

A great family movie!
The story is about an inventor Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis) who is trying to perfect his machine which, when working, will shrink matter. The problem is, nothing he does seems to make it work. But somehow, his kids Amy and Nicky (Amy O'Neill and Robert Oliveri), and his next door neighbor's kids, Russell and Ron Thompson (Thomas Wilson Brown and Jared Rushton) are shrunk! Being only a few inches tall, they end up in the garbage bag and are taken outside. They get out but the only way back to the house is through the Szalinski's front yard. They meet up with a friendly ant, a killer scorpion, the danger of being chopped up by a lawnmower, and being drowned by a water sprinkler. Will they make it home so they can be made back to their normal size?

This movie is just GREAT! Even though it's a kids movie, it's great for adults, too. I love to watch this movie with my parents. I especially love Robert Oliveri and Jared Rushton. They did a very good job acting in it. Anybody who wants to enjoy a good movie with the family, watch "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids." You won't regret it!
