2004年1月に火星の探査を開始したNASAのMars rovers、"Spirit"と"Opportunity"は2008年8月現在もCurrent missionであり、予想の期間を大きく上回って活動し続けています。（火星の風で太陽電池に積もった塵が飛ばされたことも理由）
本書はMars Exploration Rover Missionのprincipal scientistとなる著者によるもので、著者がNASAのメンバーに加わった時のことを概略した上、2004年の火星探査ローバーがミッションとして認められ、開発、打ち上げを経て、2004年9月12日までの探査までの状況をNASAの内側から描いている貴重な本です。惑星探査ローバーの研究、開発に関係する人の必読書です。
なお、2台の火星探査ローバーに搭載されている各種の探査機器はNew Yorkを本拠地とする Honeybee Robotics Spacecraft Mechanisms Corporation によっても開発されていて、本書でも同社の September 11での状況が記載されています。宇宙開発もテロと無関係ではいられないことを考えさせられました。ミッション機器についてはHoneybee RoboticsのWebサイトでも紹介されていますので参考に。

Origami space craft
Well designed documentary on two Mars rovers (Spirit and Opportunity.) We get just enough information and visuals to feel that we are there and part of the project. We are informed of the purpose. The crew looks tad polyandry.
Unlike movies that should concentrate on the story line with visuals coming in as a secondary attribute this documentary benefits form the Blu-ray treatment. One plus is the narration by Paul Newman.
Do not forget to look at the extras on the DVD.
