This Book is Not for the Faint of Heart
This book is not for those who like to view the world thru the prism of how it “should be”. If you are one who has high ideals of fair-play and honesty you may find this book repugnant, even disturbing.

On the other hand, if you want to understand the under-belly and inner-workings of love, this book is a gold mine.

This is not just empty theory, or somebody’s idea of what “might” work. You’ll be taken on an exhilarating, wild, yet charmingly addictive ride through history, seeing actual examples of how the different forms of seduction work. And throughout, it is laced with delicious quotes from some of the most successful seducers of all time. In this sense, it is at once a biography & autobiography.

Though the examples are from history, don’t make the mistake of assuming the ideas here are irrelevant. Culture & technology change. Human nature remains the same.

After reading you are sure to come away with a keener eye. Thus it is bound to make the dance-of-life that much more interesting. And not only in love. It also has application if you are in sales, want to enjoy more popularity, or just be more savvy in climbing the corporate ladder.

So, even if you cringe at the mentality & techniques described, and even if you vow to never use any of these methods yourself, best you be armed and aware of those who will.

And if you DO choose to employ these methods, know that most people secretly yearn for romance & excitement---to be swept away, seduced. In this sense, you will be providing a valuable service in exchange for getting whatever it is YOU want.

　著者は本書において力（パワー）をどのように発揮するか、力のゲームに対してどのように立ち回るとどのような結果となるかといった点について、歴史上の人物の行動や逸話等を根拠に48の法則を抽出して説明している。
　生命の本質が「力への意志」にあるのだとすれば、また人が集団を構成して、様々な力が複雑に入り組んでいるのが現実の組織や社会であるとすれば、我々は力を避けることは出来ない。本書は、「法則27」にもあるように、何かを信じたがるという我々の性癖をついて、力のゲームに上手く対処するための指南書のような読み方ができる。日常生活や組織内での行動にあてはまる部分も多いだろうし、政治、外交、戦略論、戦争などにも応用できる部分があるだろう。
　ただし、本書において繰り返し登場する歴史上の人物がいるが、作者が打ち立てたい「法則」に合致するように史実が選択されているような気もする。また、かつてHerbert Simonが”Administrative Behavior”の中で組織経営に関する原則について指摘したように、本書における「法則」も諺や格言と似ていて、互いに矛盾するような内容がもっともらしく書かれているという側面もあると思う。例えば、決意に満ちた行動が必要だったり、さりげなく余裕をみせつつことにあたらなければいけなかったり、他の人と同じように振舞ったり、王のように振舞ったり、水銀（ヘルメス）のように非定型にならなければいけなかったり、といった具合に。もっとも、各章末に”Reversal”として、法則が反対に働くこともあることが断られてはいるが、全体としては扱っているテーマの捉えにくさを反映して、力は「科学」ではなくて「アート」であるという感想をもつ。
　それでもこの本は「曖昧に、シンプルに」メッセージが伝わるようにプレゼンテーションが工夫されていて、読み物として面白い。

もう一度読むべき本
毎日、イラクでの米軍のニュースを聞いている今、この本も、もう一度読む価値があるのかもしれません。私は、Greenは、この本以外には、human factorしかありませんが、未だに強い印象を残している本です。舞台は１９５０年代初期のベトナムでまだ米軍が地上介入する前です。おそらくＣＩＡのagentであるPyleは、独り善がりのアメリカの象徴として、描かれます。そしてThird　Force（アメリカのイメージと利益に合致した）とRole of Democracyを求めるPyleの活動は、悪意(bad motives)はないにしても、結果としては、お決まりの喜劇と悲劇を引き起こすこととなります。おそらくイギリス人であり著者の分身でもあろうFowlerの有名なコメント”これほどの善意からこれほどの問題を引き起こす人間を、僕は知らない”というアメリカ人への描写は、今も当てはまるのでしょうか。今はもうなくなってしまった、ある一瞬のサイゴンの素晴らしい描写にもなっています。ただいつもながら、現地のベトナム人の描写は、生き生きとすることはなく、ステレオタイプというか、謎のままに終始します
