A guide to the proper use of the English language, in both speech and writing, by the late novelist, poet and literary critic Kinglsey Amis . . . who was often described as "concerned" with the use AND ABUSE of English. The less concerned, and often the LESS COMPETENT as well as the RESENTFUL, often used the less charitable word "obsessed".

Each entry explains the correct and the incorrect uses of the word or phrase. More importantly, it explains WHY.

Evidently, the gentleman's mastery is not limited to the English language--it extends to the other languages from which many English words have been adopted, as well as the fields and settings under which such faux pas is often displayed.

Peppered throughout with wit, often bordering on --and crossing over way beyond-- arrogance. But it is all in good humour. ("Do we know what the words we employ really mean? Do we have THE RIGHT TO USE THEM if we don't? Is 'disinterest' a word, OR IS IT IGNORANCE?").

Not for the casual speaker--and mangler--of the language. Caters only to those with a taste for FINE PROSE. Let the rest call us tiresome and pedantic (but they had better use these two adjectives correctly!).
