The Man'yoshu, often translated as "Anthology of Ten Thousand Leaves", was completed sometime in the late 8th century. Comprised of 20 books and over 4,000 poems, it is the first great collection of Japanese poetry. Poems of various themes, origin, and style fill its pages, many of which are written in the 31-syllable waka (Japanese poem) or tanka (short poem) forms, however also included are many examples of choka (chouka -- long poems). Written in a a hybrid Japanese-Chinese form called "manyogana", the Man'yoshu includes several well-know poets such as Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, a poet of the imperial court. As a court poet, his work was written to commemorate the activities of the imperial family as well as to highlight their accomplishments in what could be called "obituary poems." Other poems by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro While lengthy, this is a wonderful collection of poetry which not only showos its sensitivity to the central themes of love, the seasons, and life in ancient japan, it also shows the composters (and editors) skills at word choice and overall organization.
