描かれている内容が怖いか怖くないかという以前の、最初から計画的に＜文学＞を書こうとするStraubの態度をどう評価するかという問題にこそ本書の真の評価はかかっていると思います。わたし自身は最近の日本の新人作家たちが書き散らす品の欠片もない猥雑ホラーよりも本書のような（いい意味でも悪い意味でも）＜高級文学＞のほうを高く評価しますが、逆に本書に代表される作品群は＜日常的な怖さ＞というものを求める方にはお勧めできません。結局、こうなると＜文学性＞と＜怖さ＞の両立は難しいという昔から変わらない事実にぶつかるのがオチなのかもしれません。

Not totally terrible
However, it does reach the 85% mark. I liked this book when I was in elementary school and read it for the first time, but on recently trying it out again, I found it pretty bad. The prose is kind of wooden, the story not INCREDIBLY exciting, and also it seemed to have pretensions of 19th-century slowness that I found somewhat offputting. If you like Straub, Shadowland is better. If you question whether you do or not, I might go elsewhere for my cheap horror-story entertainment. I prefer old Barker/King/Dan Simmons, myself. If you want to treat yourself to the illusion of a literary event, however, this may be the book for you.
