Now that all three Star Wars prequel movies are out, expect plenty more novels along the lines of this gripping, fast-paced story. Picking up where the last Star Wars movie, Revenge of the Sith, ended,Dark Lord chronicles Anakin Skywalker's emotional transition from angry young Jedi to cold, ruthless Darth Vader. The novel opens on the planet Murkhana, hours before the clone troopers are given the order to turn on the Jedi and slaughter them. Jedi Master Roan Shryne and Padawan Olee Starstone escape death and manage to get off the planet, but not before getting a glimpse of the deadly Darth Vader, the new Sith lord who is the emperor's new right-hand man. But the former Anakin Skywalker is still filled with anger and resentment over what he perceives as the betrayal of his wife and his former mentor. As Sidious and Vader work to destroy the remains of the republic, Shryne and Starstone set out to rescue the remaining Jedi, who are spread out throughout the galaxy. コアなファン向けの一冊
日本の漫画界とは違い、米国のコミック界では、一人のキャラクターを複数の作家たちが描き継ぐスタイルが当たり前になっている。そのおかげで「スーパーマン」や「バットマン」のように、初登場から60年以上も経っているヒーロー達の活躍を21世紀の現在も読むことができるのだが、このシステムでは、作家が替わると作品の雰囲気ががらりと変わってしまうことも多く見られる。2003年にベン・アフレック主演で映画化される「Daredevil」も、およそ40年前に初登場した時と比べてすっかり作品のトーンが変わってしまった作品の一つである。

　この本には、その「Daredevil」の１話から25話までがまとめてあるのだが、ハードボイルド風タッチで定評のある現在の同シリーズに比べ、あまりにも荒唐無稽なトーンで描かれているので驚く人も多いだろう。主人公が戦う相手も、竹馬に乗った高層ビル専門の泥棒や、足の裏にバネをつけて蛙の扮装をした強盗などで、突っ込むのも嫌になるくらいだ。

　もちろん、当時の大御所Bill Everetが描いた第一話や、同じくWallace Woodが手がけた五～十一話、また後に「スパイダーマン」で人気になるJohn Romita Sr.が最初にMarvel Comicsで担当した十二～十九話など、（コアな）ファンにとっては資料的価値が高いが、万人が楽しめるような内容ではない。

　映画版によってこの作品に興味を持った人は、'70年代末～'80年代初頭に、「Daredevil」の世界観をハードボイルド風に軌道修正したFrank Millerの諸作品を先に読むことをお勧めする。

　蛇足ながら、その中でも特に評価の高いものを抜粋しておく。これから読む方の参考になれば幸甚である。

「Daredevil visionaries: Frank Miller vol.2 」（ISBN: 0785107711）＝Frank Millerが最初に手がけた作品群を収録。映画にも登場するくノ一・Elektraや、暗殺者・Bullseyeとの確執が描かれる。
「Daredevil: born again 」（ISBN: 0871352974）＝主人公の失墜と救済を描いた最高傑作。アメコミのベスト10では常に上位にランクインする珠玉の名作。
