Disappointing read.
The first 100 pages of this book are excellent. The beginning has a huge hook that really makes you want to know more about the protagonist, Shadow. Mr. Wednesday, the instigator of the plot throughout the book is a great character as are most of them memorable. However, it must be said that the middle of this book has no direction to the point at which some chapters can become quit boring. This novel could have easily lost 100 pages and become a much tighter story. I found myself reading certain sections of this book, wondering why Neil Gaiman's editor had not cut this section or that piece. It tended to ramble. The ending, however, was a good conclusion, if not a little predicatable.
If you like weird and wonderful characters with well-written descriptive prose then this may be the book for you. But if you like your novels to cough up the goods at a quick rather than leisured pace then avoid.

神話オタには嬉しい一冊
模範囚として三年間の服役を終え、愛する妻の元へ帰るはずの Shadow に悲報が届く。再会を目前にして、彼女が交通事故で死亡したというのだ。失意の中、我が家へと戻る途中の彼の前に、「Wednesday」と名乗る男が現れ、Shadow を助手として雇いたいと持ちかける。更に埋葬されたはずの妻が再び Shadow の前に姿を…。

「Wednesday」の正体はこの語源を知っていればすぐにわかるのですが、そういった説明は作中では明確にはされません。全体的に、北欧神話やエジプト神話・スラブ神話くらいは、読者が知っていることを前提に書かれているような感じです。知らなくても楽しめるのでしょうが、若干、意味不明の部分が残るかもしれません。
新旧の神々の戦いという題材のわりに、派手さはそれほどありません。ですが、現実と幻想が交錯する不思議な感じがとても魅力的な小説です。人間社会で地道に生計をたてる、しょぼくれた感じの古き神々がイイ味だしてます。また、小道具の使い方や、ちょっとしたエピソードの描写が非常に上手いと感じました。

It's something to read
Gaiman’s prose books have been missing something that that made Sandman so compelling. Good Omens were two friends having fun with an idea. Neverwhere was the director’s cut of the mini-series. Stardust was basically something to tell the kids. Goldfish was for the kids. Not since Sandman and his short stories has Gaiman truly written for the reader and only for the reader. It’s that last element that makes American Gods incredible. Each of the characters are compelling as some of the best Sandman characters, whether it is Death of the Endless or Hob Gadling. From the beginning, you’ll get sucked into Shadow’s life and feel the anguish that Shadow felt when he’s brought into the warden’s office and told about his wife’s death. You’ll even react the same way as Shadow when Wednesday jips the waitress, the only difference is that you’ll laugh when you hear how Wednesday defends his actions. It is truly about American Gods, not the Norse of which Odin is from nor is it or the combination of pagan and Christianity for Easter. It is about American Gods. These gods are as much of where they came from as a fully Americanized immigrant is. Sure, they still carry the same heritage, the foods that they eat and morals they brought. But once they have lived in the melting pot of America, they change and adapt to form a new personality. The new god such as fast food and internet are just as American as gods that came here. To carry on the analogy, these new gods can be comparable as the Americans that are born and bred here. It’s just that these new gods and Americans that are born and bred here are products of the melting pot. Now stray away from the analogy, the plot is about the storm of the old gods and the new gods with a grift involved.

You should read THe Price of Immortality it is a awsome book and written by C.M. Whitlock

想像するしかない原始時代
原始時代の生活は、結局、誰にも証明はできないもの。

このジーン・アウルのエイラのシリーズは、想像力をかきたてるにはもってこい＆超超超お勧めです。現代人の自分自身、何も疑わず、当り前のように使っている道具の一つ一つ、例えばお鍋（縄文式土器）、針、大工用品（やり）に感動してしまうようになります。初めて作った人はどんな気持ちだったのだろう？どうやって考えたんだろう？ナドナド、原始人と同じ体験をしたような気分になれます。

ホームドラマ化？
なんだか、このシリーズも初期のサバイバル物から、次第に人間関係中心の愛憎劇に変化してきましたね。
アイラが人間社会に順応して成長していく様子を見るのは嬉しいのですが、だんだん初期の緊張感がなくなってきているのは残念です。
3巻、4巻でアイラがあまりに理想化されたスーパー・ウーマンになってしまったので、今回、普通の女性としていろいろ人間関係で苦労することはいいことだとは思いますが・・
多分、次巻で完結すると思いますが、最後は新旧人類の掛け橋としてスケールの大きいアイラの活躍を期待しています。

待ちかねた・・・
このシリーズの長年のファンで、４作目から翻訳出版が待ちきれず原書で読んでます。海外では目立つベストセラーの棚に並んでいるのに、日本であまり知られていないのは残念・・・。エイラとジョンダラーの長い旅がやっと終わり、待ち望んだジョンダラーの故郷での生活、エイラと人々との関わりが詳細に活き活きと描かれています。ゼランドニー族は、今までに登場した部族よりはるかに大きく、よく統制され、人々の感情も複雑になり、原始の時代において”文化”の始まりを感じさせられます。洞穴や壁画などの描写が美しく、思わずヨーロッパへ遺跡を見に行きたくなりました。★結婚式のエピソードが泣けました！あの衣装を着た二人が目の前に浮かぶようで・・・一番好きなシーンです。二番目は、出産時のゼランドニへの告白シーン。その他にも印象的なエピソードが満載で、続きが気になってどんどん読み進めましたが、未消化に終わり次号に持ち越し？の話題も多かったです。エイラは相変わらずスーパーウーマンで何かと目立ってしまうのですが、ここで初めて接する妬み・差別という感情、これまで以上に重要になる霊的な儀式、そして子供は！？と次号への期待を残し、盛り沢山の満足のいく内容でした♪

驚愕のラスト

本書のバックカバーの粗筋を読んだ時には、16歳のインド人の少年パイが太平洋で遭難して一匹のハイエナとシマウマとオランウータンと虎と一緒に救命ボートの中に取り残されて漂流するといった内容が書いてあったので、動物との交流を描く心暖まる物語を期待していたが、その期待は大きく裏切られた。

前半の1/3ぐらいまでは、パイのインドでの生活が描かれる。この部分はパイの様々な宗教への傾倒ぶりが描かれたりしており、興味深くはあったが退屈であった。

パイが家族と一緒にカナダへ移住する船に乗船し、出発まもなく船が沈みボートに取り残されるところから物語が急転する。ここからは延々といかにパイが猛獣の虎と一緒に漂流生活を過ごすかが描かれる。この部分はそれなりに面白かったが、このレベルの海洋冒険小説であれば、もっと本格的なものが他にもありそうで、正直言って作者が何を目的に本書を書いたのかと疑問さえ有した。

ところが最終章を読んで、文字通り腰が抜けるほどの衝撃を受けた。この最終章を読む前は本書の評価は星2つか3つと思っていたが、評価が一変した。本書を手に取った人は、途中読み進めるのがつらくても最後まで読み通すことをお勧めする。

日本の作品は出来るだけ単行本で読むことをモットーにしていますが、海外の小説はペーパーバックで読んでいます。ハードカバーが入手しにくい点とあちらのハードカバーは通勤電車内で読むには大きすぎ、重すぎという難点があるからです。またつまらない作品は途中で読み捨てることにしているので、まずペーパーバックで読んでみてという、すこし経済的な判断もあります。と前置きが長くなりましたが、この１冊は途中でほぼ止めそうになった本です。お薦めできません。
　インドで動物園を経営していた一家が貨物船（日本船籍、船名はすこしおかしいですが）で動物ともどもカナダへ移住する折、嵐と機関トラブルで難破沈没し、主人公Pieは奇跡的に救命ボートに難を逃れるのですが、なんとそのボートには傷ついたシマウマと、ハイエナとベンガル虎が相客として乗っているのです。さて主人公の命運はいかにと、モチーフとしては大変ドラマチックなのですが、正直言ってこの作者はこの題材（実話ということです）を感動作にしたてあげるには力量不足と思われます。事実この作品の退屈な前半部で小説家を志しスペインで第1作を発表するも全く不評でインドに流れてきてと自己紹介しているほどなのですから。
　じゃお前なぜ買ったんだと思われるでしょうが、裏表紙に久しぶりに登場したインタナショナルなファンタジーなどと推薦文があったりしたせいもありますが、なんといっても表紙が良かったのです。南洋のわきあがる雲を背景に漂流するボートの先頭に巨大なベンガル虎が水先案内人のように乗り出しており、後ろのほうに小さなインド少年が描かれているのです。誰が見てもこれはジャングルブックや狼王ロボーのような動物と人間の感動的なふれあい物語と思うではないですか。
漂着した海岸でのエンディングももっと感動的になるはずなのが尻つぼみのままおわってしまいます。

不思議な物語
「ページが飛ぶ」とはこのことでしょうか。
一気に読んでしまいました。
主人公は船が沈没して漂流します。
「ロビンソンクルーソー」のような「コンチキ号漂流記」のような不思議な感じです。
家族は全滅して悲惨な状況なのですが何故かユーモアがあります。
ひさびさのヒットでした。

映画化もされます
素晴らしい素晴らしい素晴らしい…と、何回でも言ってしまいたい一冊。
漂流モノの本は数あれど、この『パイの物語』は別格です。ただの漂流
モノなんかじゃない。僕がここであらすじを紹介するよりも、とにかく
読んで欲しい。絶対に面白いから。損は絶対にしません。

…と、僕はこの本を異常なほど愛しています。だからこそ映画化の話が
とても心配なのです。文句なしの傑作になってくれればいいのですが、
大コケされては困ります。まぁこの原作自体が大変素晴らしいので、大
コケすることはないと思いますが。という意識があるからこそ心配です。

さらに映画化の話についてもう一つ心配なのが、監督についてです。当初
は『シックス・センス』『サイン』『ヴィレッジ』のシャマラン監督が監
督をするということでしたが、シャマランの映画会社との問題から白紙に
なったらしく、監督は変わるようです。『アメリ』のジュネ監督という話
を耳にしました。

これらの問題を乗り越えて傑作映画を製作してもらいたいです。

冒険となぞに夢中
ラストでの巧みな変貌。こういう形で終息するとは。まさに《騙り》の妙味です。それに物語の大半を占める漂流部は、読者がすでに主人公が助かっていることを知っているにも関わらずページを繰る手が止まらぬおもしろさでした。しかし、壮絶でしたね。サバイバルを描くこと自体壮絶にならざるを得ないものなんでしょうが、それにしても本書のは生々しく強烈で強く印象に残りました。それに比べ第一部の世界はどうでしょう。人とは違う宗教観をもち、動物の生態に関しても驚くべき知識を披露するこの少年のインドでの生活。まったく漂流物とは無関係のこの導入部が後に続くメイン部分での少年とトラの関係をリアルに描く布石になってるのには舌を巻きました。しかしここにも作者の罠が巧みにはられていて、結局この物語は３Ｄホログラムなんです。見る角度によって映像が変わる。うわぉう、見事に裏切られた。でも、こういう裏切られかたなら大歓迎です。
