多読入門の１冊に
ニューヨークのバクスターさんの家で飼われている鳥のフェリックス。
ブラジルにある「自分の家」に帰ろうと、バクスターさんが鳥かごを開けたまま
ちょっと離れたすきに、フェリックスは大空へと飛び立ちました。

ブラジルまでの道が分からなかったり、悪天候や空腹など
試練を乗り越え、出会いをしながら「家」へと帰って行く
心温まるストーリーです。

私は多読を始めた時に、２冊目にこの本に出会ったのですが
レベルを上げる度に、この本を読み返して力のつき具合をチェックしています。

１回目に読んだときは、英語が大の苦手で、やり直し英語の第１歩を
踏み出したばかりでした。
英語で１つのお話を読みきれた！という感動があった事を覚えています。

とてもやさしい単語と文法で書かれていて、挿絵が多いので絵本のようです。
多読や英語学習をこれから始めようという方には、文章量もちょうど良く
ご自分の実力を試してみる１冊にも、良いと思います。

英語教授法の基本図書
英語教授法の基本図書の一つとして広く読まれている本の改訂版です。今回は経年による教授法の考え方の変化に対応して大幅に改訂を行われるとともにDVDが付属しています。２００７年度のThe Duke of Edinburgh English Speaking Union English Language Awardを受けています。DVDはPALとNTSCに両面で対応するようになっていますので，日本でも見られます。内容は伏せておきます。英語教師が自分の教育実践を理論的に振り返るのに最良の書籍です。

法律文章を英語で書くためのレッスン書
本書はシカゴ大学出版局によって出されている、Law Schoolの法律文書を作成するための講座で使われている入門テクストである。

極めて懇切丁寧な手引きによって法律文書を作成するための方法論が書かれていて、これに匹敵するようなテクストは残念ながら国内には存在しない。

比較的平易な英文なので、法律実務家や国内の法科大学院の学生にもお薦めしたい書物である。

最近出版された本（手元にあるのは2001年度版）であるので、利用価値も大きいものと思われる。

日本でも役に立つテキストです。
実はローコースの入門クラスとして開講されているクラスで
使っているテキストです。
法律文書の読み方や書き方を分かりやすく解説しており、
日本の裁判で書証を作成する際にも随分と役に立つと思います。
私は現在最高裁で係争中の事件を抱えており、もっと早くに
この本で勉強すればよかったと思います。（日本でこういった内容の

コースを開講していなかったので仕方ありませんが。）
難しいのは、アメリカの実際を判例を元にしたエクスサイズです。
しかし、回答が巻末についていますので、自力でもやってみれば
総合的なライティング力がつくのではないかと思います。

今日は、テキストの内容に沿って、自分の事件をサマライズして
みました。

日本の裁判所とアメリカの裁判所といなありますので、適切な
言葉が見つからなくて。。。でも思ったより訂正個所が少なくて
ほっとしました。

本番より易しい
英英辞典なども有名なロングマン刊行の次世代ＴＯＥＦＬ（iBT）参考書です。電話帳のようなペーパーバックです。
５２から８０点ぐらいの力がある中上級者向けです。初心者向けにはIntroductory Courseがあります。
リーディング、リスニング、スピーキング、ライティングの４部に分かれ、まずはそれぞれのセクションの模擬テストを解き、
最初の実力、現時点での弱点を確認します。その後設問のタイプ別に解き方、攻略テクニックを学びながら、
練習問題を解いていくという構成です。例えば、リーディングセクションでは「本文で言及されていない事柄を選ぶ」、
「内容をまとめている文を選ぶ」、「単語の意味を推測する」など設問タイプごとに戦略が解説され、
ひとつの設問タイプに対して数個の長文問題が出され、設問タイプごとに徹底練習できるようになっています。
たくさんの問題を解いた後は、総まとめとして再びそのセクションの模擬テストを解きます。
リスニングセクションも同様に進みますが、音声は別売ＣＤに収録され、付録のＣＤＲＯＭには入っていないので注意が必要。
スピーキングセクションは、短時間でのメモの作り方、話の構成の仕方が解説され、たくさん練習問題があります。
この部分の音声も、別売ＣＤに収録されています。ライティングセクションはどのように解答を構成し、何を書くべきかを丁寧に指南。
セクション別攻略法の後はミニテストが８回分、本番同様のフルテストが２回分も入っています。
巻末には文法アドバイスや、解答があります。また、得点をスコアに換算する表もついているので、自分でスコアが出せます。
また、どういうタイプの問題を間違えたかがわかるような表もついていて、自分の弱点を細かく具体的に把握できます。
付録のＣＤＲＯＭには、本とは１００％異なる内容が収録されており、それぞれの設問タイプ別練習、ミニテスト、
模擬テストが入っています。本にもたっぷり練習問題がある上、ＣＤＲＯＭにはまた全く別の内容が同じ位入っているので、
これでもかという程練習を積むことができます。但し、リーディングは長文と設問を合わせた長さが本番より短く、
リスニングも本番より少々ゆっくりなので、実際のテストよりは平易なので注意が必要です。
ＣＤＲＯＭも、リーディングは文字が異様に小さく（本番ではけっこう大きいです）もう少しリアルにして欲しかったです。
しかし、問題数が豊富でたくさん練習できたし、解答の仕方や問題の攻略テクニックは非常に役立ち、
おかげで練習問題の出来も良くなり、本番では１００点突破できました。本書の特徴は、「リスニング対策に普段から英語を聴こう」とか、
「リーディング対策に、いろいろな知識をつけよう」等の対策法を述べず、「解答に必要なことは全部そこにあるのだから、背景知識は不要」として
テストそのものをどう解いたらいいのかを集中的に現実的に述べていることです。
よく出る米国植民地の歴史を学ぶよりもとにかくテスト自体を頑張って解けば良いのだ、ということで多少気が楽になりました。

Good and bad points
Right from the off the author gives reasons why many orthodox teachers do not use the book. One reason that he does not mention is that his presentation is incomplete in some important ways, in addition to the ways he mentions. One: He presents components of kanji as whole meanings, leading the learner to believe that these independent components are whole kanji. This is not correct. The system reminds me of the radical system of learning more than anything and definitely has merit, especially since the author says that the text should be used as an independent study suppliment to your normal learning. I went through the first two hundred kanji swiftly using his system but finally had to give it up because I was just finding too many inconsistencies. I understand his choices, (choosing archaic meanings, presenting the kanji in an order that doesn't match the Joyo or common usage lists, cutting the kanji incorrectly...), but couldn't continue as it was hurting my study more than helping. I love the idea and am impressed with some of the points made (giving an English language learner the same benefit as a Chinese learner...), but I honestly cannot recommend the book. If the book sounds like it's for you, then by all means go for it, especially if you are a beginner, and don't mind that later down the road you WILL have to correct what you've learned. The author says that people that have been studying Japanese already will have difficulty, and this is true. If you read the introduction, see his idea illustrated with the first few kanji, you WILL improve your study. Go to a library and save your money.

great but beware
While I think the idea is great and helpful I think the buyer should check out what it is all about first.
I agree that the imaging is helpful and I have found making my own stories to be beneficial. Some of Heisig's stories are easy to imagine; some of his stories seem far-fetched. So, when one can't connect with his image it is best to make your own. You just have to be consistent with key words. Also, check out this URL after you buy the book because there is a list of errata that need to be corrected.

Character Assassination...in the nicest way
I had the pleasure of attending a lecture by Heisig whilst studying at Nanzan University. I am now most of the way through a masters degree in advanced Japanese and still find Heisig's technique extremely valuable. During his lecture he drew a flower on the whiteboard and the word "flower" next to it. He explained that as we had grown up we had learnt to read to the point that the image and the word had become inseparable. It is hard to look at the image without thinking of the word and visa-versa. He then wrote the Italian word for flower "Fiore" (as an example) next to it and explained that as we learnt Italian we first connect "Fiore" and "Flower", then as our Italian improves we gradually connect the image with the Italian word. The problem with Japanese is that we must connect the image with the romaji, the hiragana, (occasionally the katakana) and the kanji. These connections are multiple and complex to develop. By breaking the kanji into component parts comprised of radicals, the 'picture' of the kanji becomes easier to assimilate. Heisig takes each radical and gives you a story to remember it. The stories get more complex, but it is suprisingly affective. This is a technique used by "memory men" etc to remember phone book numbers etc. by giving a number an identity.....so for 7451776....(00)7 is James Bond, 4 is "fore" in golf, and 5 is Michael Jackson "5". 1776 can be US Independence. So... James Bond plays golf with Michael Jackson on Independence Day. A simple example but extremely useful when applied to the kanji. My only advice in using the book is to try to personalise the stories. Heisig is an American and so stories about baseball made no connection with me (Irish). I will never forget the kanji for "nose" after Heisig explained it was "having your brains pulled out through your nose"! Enjoy!

THE Way for Foreigners Not to Forget the Writing of Kanji
Heisig's method for learning (and as he says "not forgetting") the Kanji is a godsend for those who were not raised in Japanese culture. As he rightly points out, kanji was forced on the Japanese language (from Chinese), and has no inherent tie to it.

Why should adults who have learned to think conceptually be relegated to rote memory as Japanese children are? Heisig teaches us to separate the writing of the kanji from its pronunciation, and focus on its connection to the meaning of the character in this book. Then after one has mastered the writing of the required kanji, one can go to book II in the series to focus on the readings.

Of course, this method will prove less useful to those who are currently trying to master kanji they are learning in a language class. This method is better learned independently from the classroom, and if possible, before the rest of the language is picked up.

Heisig's method focusses on what he calls primitives, that is, the smaller pieces that make up more complicated characters. By learning kanji in groups based on primitives, the adult mind is able to pick up (and not forget) characters at a much quicker pace than by rote memory. And considering that even adult Japanese have trouble remembering how to write characters (especially with the advent of the wapro, computer and cell phone), the foreigner can expect great difficulty in remember how to write kanji without a method such as these.

子供も楽しんでます
英単語が無理強いせずに覚えられればと思って、５歳の子ども用に購入しました。

絵が可愛いので、見せた途端に目が輝きました。

本の厚みは５ミリ（測ってみました）と薄いのですが子供が一人で持って見るのにちょうどよい厚みだと思いました。

でも内容はしっかり厚く、単語も物語っぽくなっていたり、天気の単語など、子供の日々の生活に関連した作りになっていて、ただ難しくて分厚い絵辞典より、はるかによかったです。

大人は、ほとんど知っている単語ですが、曲にあわせて唄ったり、子供と一緒に楽しんでいます。

高い教材はいらない！これは最高！
　0から7歳までの子供に英語を教えています。このピクチャーデクショナリーは絵がかわいく、文字も大きくみやすくて非常に良いです。ＣＤ付きで歌やチャンツを聞きながら自然に英語を聞かせることができるので、生徒さんにお勧めしています。私は何ページかカラーコピーをしてお家に貼っています。子供が喜んで単語を読みます。ラミネートしてランチョンマットにもしています。家では大活躍です。

本とＣＤの中身に対してこのお値段は破格だと思います。２歳半の息子と英語学習駆け出しの自分とともに絵とチャンツや歌などを楽しみながら、毎日眺めて単語を音読しています。お買い得だと思いますよ。

If you've got the Children's Picture Dictionary, then this one is an excellent stepping stone to it. Get the Activity book and it feels more complete. Good art, nice organization--good stuff.

もう少し流れがあれば、、、
この本を、Activity Resource Bookと共に3歳の子に使っています。
絵が可愛く、子どもたちの興味を引きますが、この年齢の子向けの本にありがちな、
出てくるボキャブラリーやキーセンテンスそのものは悪くなくても、
その持っていき方がユニット毎に独立した感じで、ちょっと唐突な感じがします。
前のユニットで学んだことを使いながら次に進むという点に欠けている感じがするので、
使い方に工夫が必要かもしれません。

Activity Resource Bookについては、1〜3歳前半の、モータースキルがまだ足りない子どもには、
少し難しい場合もあるように思えますが、photocopiableですので、
何度も繰り返して使っていくうちに、徐々にそうった能力も養われていくのかなと思います。

English Phonetics and Phonology
As advised in the introduction this book offers a very comprehensive course for anyone studying linguistics or English pronunciation and is a standard text for many phonetics/linguistic courses. It uses RP, or BBC pronunciation as Roach calls it, with a clearly laid out `list of symbols` and chart of the IPA in the front few pages of the book. The book is a VERY solid text on phonology and works as an invaluable guide to studying the IPA and English sounds. I personally have gained from using it but it requires a lot of study, it really is a study book which needs a lot of time before any benefit is accrued. Don`t think you can start it at chapter 8 because unless you are trained in phonetics you will be lost. Having read all of the book though you will have receiced an excellent education in phonetics and phonology.

A final warning though: You are advised to buy the book WITH the cd or you might find like me that you cannot get hold of the CD. I tried to contact the publishers for this and they told me they have sold out. Also a search on Amazon did not yield any positive results for getting the CD.
