捨てる神あれば拾う神あり。
戦争により二つの国に挟まれ、どちらの国にも疎外される方々。悲しい事にいつの世にもそんな方々がおられるような…。
アメリカ版のサイトに、アイデンティティが無いのにアイデンティティ・クライシスに陥るのか？と疑問を呈した方の書き込みがあり、軽いショックをおぼえました。おそらくWASPの方には、感覚として理解できない問題なのかもしれません（その方だって移民の子孫の筈ですが…）。
この物語の主人公は「祖国アメリカに忠誠を誓い、アメリカの為に命を賭けて戦う」事を選べず、結果としてノーノーと呼ばれ、終戦後今度は（戦前までは溶け込んでいた）町の人々からも疎外されてしまいます。そのため同じ立場を選択した仲間としか交流する事ができず、益々コミュニティーが分割される結果に（現在のジャクソン通りにそんな影は感じられませんが）。
家庭も崩壊し絶望的な状況の中、立場あるいは人種を超え、彼を丸ごと受け入れてくれる人々の存在に、徐々に気付いていく主人公。物語の壮絶な結末とは裏腹に、何故か読後感が爽やか。厚い雲の合間から太陽が現れた感じがするのは私だけでしょうか。

二文化間に迷った若者たち
教科書で語られることの少ない第二次世界大戦中の日本人強制収容。そこで、日系人たちは多くの選択を求められた。日本人であることを否定するか、アメリカ人としていきるか。主人公の日系二世、ケンジはアメリカをとることをできないまま、日本人としてもアメリカの日本人社会に受け入れられずにいた。日本を見たことのない日本人。アメリカにジャップと背を向けられた若者が自分の居場所を見つけることは、できないその様子がとても悲しい。居場所を失った若者たちの絶望、無気力な生き様がケンジの目を通して生生しく描写されている。これは、在日がかかえる問題に共通するものがある。

この本はJane（主人公）の１６歳からの人生の物語です。この本には３人の彼女の夫がでてきて、彼女がそれぞれ彼らの事をどう思ったのか、また彼らを通して、本当の愛を探していきます。

An outstanding story
Their Eyes Were Watching God was one of the best books that I've ever read. The book answered a lot of questions about life. We are faced with several conflicts in humanity with choices having to be made between Love, Good, Evil, Hope or reality, and Truth. It is a story about Janie, a young black woman, who tries to find herself through her grandmother's footsteps and eventually confronts herself to become the person she knows is of her own good. Taken along the memory lane in a small southern black town, 'Their Eyes were Watching God' is a beautiful portrayal of the conflicts confronting Janie, not only about herself but also about how her society perceives her. Through an amazing creativity in characters, plot development, excellent narrative, lessons and dialogues and an easy ride through time, Zora successful made the reader to understand and appreciate black culture. This absolutely credible story is a highly recommended book to anyone with a taste for classic stories.

Brilliant story told in a befuddling language
Two aspects are key to making a novel outstanding - Great substance, and Fluent style. Substance, of course, is the very base on which a story is told. On substance, Hurston scores big time with 'Their Eyes Were Watching God'. Vivid characterizations, tangibly real situations, people that think and act like some around us, and a strong message, all combine to make this novel one of the most brilliant stories ever written. Where it lets the average reader down, though, is in the area of style and presentation. More specifically, though Hurston has consciously decided to adopt the common English tongue that would be spoken by the characters in her novel, the words make the reader stop and start several times in his or her attempts to grasp the meaning. Such an approach, though artistically more credible, certainly limits the popularity of the novel as a mass paperback.
