交差する複数のストーリー
妊娠、出産、あるいは堕胎という人々が神経質になりやすい事柄を大胆に取り入れた物語でした。科学的な根拠がどの程度のものなのか分かりませんでしたが、ある意味、タブーに挑戦した物語だと思うので、躁鬱気質や重度の偏頭痛で劇的な効果を高めようとしたり、ネアンデルタール人とのチャネリングで神秘性を高めようとしたり、そんな小細工をしない方が良かったという気がします。しかし、謎あり、政治的なかけひきあり、男女の恋愛ありと盛りだくさんな内容で割合に楽しめました。多くの話題を取り込んでも散漫になっていない点は良いと思います。

While other SF writers sleep with the works of Steven Hawkins under their pillows and address quantum mechanics and super-string theory in their far-future writings, here Greg Bear eschews all that and dives headlong into the debate currently raging at the heart of evolutionary biology to bring us this gripping hard SF tour de force, wherein the next step in human evolution is frighteningly near at hand.
Whipping up a heady mix of ancient viruses reborn, fearsome archeaological finds and evil government conspiracies, Greg Bear thrusts Kaye Lang and her cohorts into a very personal head-on collision with the results of the great leap forward. If Richard Dawkins is listening out there, maybe it's time he started hoping he's got it all wrong!
If this engrossing novel has one flaw it is the amount of space Bear devotes to convincing us of the validity of his protagonist's theory. My guess is that most readers, like myself, will have swallowed the whole thing hook, line and sinker from the word go and will be a little disappointed at the lack of space left to explore the answer to the question that'll be on the tip of your tongue from the moment you've figured out what's coming!
An enthralling read. If and when (my guess is when) Bear gets around to penning a sequel, I'll be first in line!
