映画にはないエピソードが楽しめる
ラッセル・クロウ主演の映画も、この本と同じタイトルになっているが、
実際には、全２０巻もある原作の一部が取り上げられているだけだ。
映画は気に入ったけど、原作まで読む必要はないかなと
迷っておられるならば、１巻から手に取って見られることをお勧めする。
オーブリーとマチュリンの出会いから物語は始まり、
映画では見られなかった名脇役も登場し、陸での総督邸パーティ等、
当時の英国海軍軍人の生活が窺える。
料理名や地名など原書では難しいと思ったが、それらの解説書もあるので、
好きなら原書に挑戦して、オーブリー艦長の口真似をしてみるのも一興。

the best fiction I've ever read
This is the first in the 20 book Aubrey-Martin series. Together, these books are without a doubt the best fiction I've ever read. Part of what makes O'brian's series so great is the flawless historical detail, the great action, the political intrigue, and the humor. It's also the surprising turns of plot, the unpretentious yet brillant prose, and the great themes of friendship, honor, love, and death. But most of all it is the living, breathing characters that grow and change with each novel. I've experienced so much with each character that they are more real to me than many people I know in real life. All other fiction pales in comparison.
